“Palawan… Butterfly Paradise”

Palawan… Butterfly Paradise video coverPalawan - the most westerly island of the Philippines - is exceptionally rich in butterflies. It actually has more species than the whole of North America.

But why is it so rich in butterflies? How did Palawan’s butterflies get there? Where from? When?

The film offers answers to these questions, using maps to show the movement of the continental Plates, global distributions and migrations, and the important effects on Palawan of the last great Ice Age.

The closing shots of Trogonoptera trojana are a must for any enthusiast of Asian butterflies. The “cover” species, Parthenos sylvia, the Cruiser, is also beautifully seen.

The film won Scientific, and Educational, Awards at the Missoula International Wildlife Film Festival, 2002.

As with all your films, it brings an extraordinary tranquil joy and unhurried contemplative pleasure…sheer delight - Sir David Attenborough.

It’s a fascinating introduction to an exceptional island. Over 80 species are shown, all filmed in entirely natural conditions.
